Manga-based film to screen in U.S. on January 20; opens in Japan on January 29

Viz Pictures' New People unit and Fathom Events have issued a list (PDF) of American theaters that will screen the first live-action film based on Hiroya Oku's manga Gantz on January 20, 2011. Over 300 theaters are listed in 46 states; the four without screenings are Alaska, Mississippi, South Dakota, and Wyoming.

Kazunari Ninomiya (Tekkonkinkreet, Letters from Iwo Jima) of the Arashi musical group and award-winning actor Ken'ichi Matsuyama (Death Note, Detroit Metal City, NANA, The Legend of Kamui) star as two friends who are resurrected after a deadly subway accident and forced to take on violent, mysterious missions. Yuriko Yoshitaka (Kaiji), Natsuna, and Takayuki Yamada (Train Man, Crows Zero, H2: Kimi to Ita Hibi) also star in this film from director Shinsuke Satō (The Princess Blade, Suna-dokei, Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror).

The film premiered in Japan on November 29, and it opens for wide release there on January 29. The film's American screenings will include an English-language over-dubbed track, but a live interview with the two Japanese stars will follow the film.

Coincidentally, Funimation's Canadian screenings of Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Ha) will also be on January 20.

Update: Kazunari Ninomiya's spelling corrected. Thanks, moans.
