Weekend Wrapup: 3/Apr - 9/Apr

This week we have some big Australian news, live-action Akira rumours dismissed and BioWare preparing more anime

Siren Visual, in conjunction with Anime News Network, announced a new anime streaming solution for Australian and New Zealand viewers during the Siren Visual panel at Supanova Melbourne. The service offers two subscription plans, with the premium plan enabling viewers to watch anime in high-definition video. Episodes one and two of Tiger & Bunny are now available for free viewing. The second series to be simulcast will be C (TV), with more information regarding the schedule due on Monday, April 11th.

The 2011 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards panel of judges has nominated 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa as a contender for Best Continuing Series and Best Writer/Artist. The manga 7 Billion Needles, inspired by a science fiction story by Hal Clement, has been nominated for Best Adaptation from Another Work. The titles nominated for Best U.S. Edition of International Material--Asia are Ayako, Bunny Drop, A Drunken Dream and Other Stories, House of Five Leaves, and 20th Century Boys.

In an interview with MTV, actor Robert Pattinson has stated that he has not been approached for the role of Kaneda in the live-action Akira movie to be made by Warner Brothers. Pattinson's name appeared on the Deadline website in what was claimed to be a list of actors considered for the role of Kaneda, which also included Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Justin Timberlake (The Social Network), and Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the LINE).

And finally, BioWare has announced that Funimation and T.O. Entertainment have agreed to co-produce an anime film based on Bioware's Mass Effect video game franchise. The series allows players to control Commander Shepard in the year 2183 as they fight against a wave of destructive aliens called the Reapers. This film will be distributed to home video and digital networks in the summer of 2012.
