The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) is hosting the 11th Annual School Girls and Mobilesuits (SGMS) Workshop. The three-day workshop runs from September 30 to October 2 and focuses anime and manga influences in culture. This year, the SGMS Workshop will also feature the first Mechademia Conference. Undergraduates, graduates, and independent scholars are encouraged to submit essays about the theme of "Creation and Direction," as well as proposals for panels or presentations.

Speakers this year include Dr. Marc Hairston of the William B. Hanson Center for Space Science, Dr. Thomas LaMarre the Professor of East Asian Studies for McGill University, and Dr. Sharalyn Orbaugh Professor of Asian and Women's Studies for the University of British Columbia and Former Visiting Professor of Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto. Dr. Marc Hairston has written multiple articles for the magazine Animerica as well as authoring the only manga-inspired series sponsored by NASA.

Mechademia began as an annual series of books from editor Frenchy Lunning and the University of Minnesota Press. More information about the five-year-old series can be found at the publisher's website.

Notable past speakers at SGMS include Yoshitoshi ABe, Tomoko Taniguchi, Maki Isaka, Masami Toku, Udon, Crispin Freeman, and Sean Michael Wilson.
