Brighton Japan Festival Begins Friday

The Brighton Japan Festival begins on Friday June 17 and Sunday June 26. It has now confirmed a double-bill of the live-action films Dororo (based on Osamu Tezuka's manga) and Cutie Honey (directed by Hideaki Anno from Gō Nagai's manga). The double-bill will take place on Saturday 18 June from 1930. The venue is the 'Festival Hub,' which is located in the city centre in front of Brighton's Moshi Moshi restaurant (click 'location' for map). Tickets are £5 in advance, or £6 on the door.
According to the programme, the double-bill will be followed by 'an audio-visual DJ set of KanZeOn, a film exploring the mystical understanding of sound through encounters with religious musicians in Japan.'
As previously reported, the Brighton Japan Festival will also include two anime film screenings. Akira will have a late-night screening at 2330 on Friday 24 June at the Duke of York's Picturehouse cinema (map). It will be accompanied by a nine-minute short film called Figment: Did I, described as a 'collage of live action, digital and analogue animation.'
Redline will screen at the same venue on Saturday 25 June, again at 2330. The cinema will also be showing the original 1954 live-action film Godzilla on Sunday June 26 (2330).
Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 are the days of the Asahi Anime Festival in Bartholomew Square. The events are detailed here. Saturday's events will include Lolita Fashion Shows at 1220 and 1540, and a Cosplay Contest at 1440. Sunday's events include a Jpop performance (1315) and a Japanese-style game show (1545).
