Shueisha Downplays Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Film Report

Manga's publisher: Nothing decided at this time

The Japanese publisher Shueisha downplayed the report by Bungeishunju's Weekly Bunshun magazine that Hirohiko Araki's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga has live-action and anime film adaptations in the works. The publisher said, "We don't know where that story came from, but nothing has been decided at this time."

A movie distributor source told the Cinema Today website, "We often get questions about movie adaptations of Jojo's from the press, but we've heard nothing."

Weekly Bunshun reported on Thursday that live-action and anime film adaptations were in the works by separate film companies. However, no other source has corroborated Weekly Bunshun's report.

Araki's manga has sold over 70 million copies so far. The manga already inspired two original video anime series and a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood anime film. Viz published the 16th volume of the manga in North America in December. Super Techno Arts once released the original video anime volumes in North America, but stopped in May of 2008 — the same month that anime and manga sales in Japan were temporarily halted. At the time, online Islamic protesters objected to imagery in the anime that they deemed offensive.
