Sailor Moon Tops Graphic Novels in U.S. Bookstores for 3rd Month (Update 2)

2 Sailor V books in top 15; Sailor Moon volume 1 is #5

The second volume of Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon manga topped Nielsen BookScan's top 20 graphic novels in American bookstores for November. It was the third month in a row that the manga ranked #1 on the chart.

In addition, Takeuchi has three more books in the top 20: Codename: Sailor V volume 2 debuted at #3, while Codename: Sailor V volume 1 dropped from #6 to #13. Sailor Moon volume #1 slipped to #5 after two months at #1. Kodansha ordered a second print run after the first print run of 50,000 copies "sold out in just four weeks."

Black Bird volume 11 landed at #9, and Black Butler volume 7 stayed at #10 in its second month. Naruto volume 52 dropped from #3 to #11 in its third month, while Vampire Knight volume 13 fell from #5 off the chart in its second month.

The BookScan rankings represent sales at Barnes & Noble and other book chains, independent bookshops, and online purchases — but not sales at comic book stores, Walmart, and some other venues.

Update: The retail news source ICv2 cited supply problems for the initial lack of the first Sailor Moon volume on the latest chart. Dallas Middaugh, Director of Publisher Services of Del Rey, told ANN on Thursday that there were no supply problems with Sailor Moon volume 1. "[The sales polling service] BookScan mistakenly listed the title under Juvenile Fantasy for the final week of November, so ICv2 missed it in their calculations. Sailor Moon 1 is in stock and was in fact the #8 bestselling graphic novel in November."

Update: ICv2 updated its article with Sailor Moon volume 1 at #5, and the other rankings moved accordingly.
