Poll: 35.3% of Japanese Middle School Girls Bought Animation CDs

posted on by Egan Loo
34.7% of high school boys also bought animation CDs in March-August 2011

According to the "2011 Music Media User Survey" from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ), 10.4% of those surveyed in Japan bought new animation CD albums between March and August of last year, and 4.4% bought new game CD albums. 17.4% bought animation CD albums during the same period in 2010, and 18% bought animation CD albums during the same period in 2009.

In particular, male students from middle school to college, as well as female middle and high school students, were heavy buyers of animation CDs. 26.8% of the male middle school students and 34.7% of the male high school students bought animation CD singles. 35.3% of the female middle school students and 21.9% of the female high schools students bought animation CD singles.

34.9% of the survey respondents said they bought a music CD — an 1.2% increase from the previous year — and 23.4% rented. 10.7% bought music online, or 1.4% more than in the previous year. 23.5% now have smartphones.

The data does not distinguish between Japanese animation CDs and overseas animation CDs. RIAJ conducted the nationwide survey online with a sample size of 4,960 in August, with follow-up group interviews in October.
