Independent Screenings in Exeter and Bristol

There will be two screenings in the Exeter area of the animated film Tatsumi, on Friday February 17 at 9 p.m. and on Wednesday February 22 at 8 p.m. The Friday screening will be at the Picture House Exeter (directions), with tickets available here. The Wednesday 22 screening will be at the Plough Arts Centre in Great Torrington (directions). Both events are part of the Animated Exeter festival.
While Tatsumi was made in Singapore, it is about the pioneering manga artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi, who wrote adult ("gekiga") stories in strip form. Directed by Eric Khoo, the film adapts five of Tatsumi's manga stories, threaded together with Tatsumi's account of his struggle to make a living after World War II. (The autobiographical material comes from Tatsumi's manga, A Drifting Life.)
Meanwhile, Bristol's Cube Cinema (directions) will screen a program of experimental anime at 7.30 p.m. on Sunday 19 February. Beyond Anime: The Outer Limits is comprised of sixteen short animations made between 2002 and 2011. A full list of the films is here.
On the same evening the Cube Cinema is also screening a rare live-action Japanese horror film from 1938, The Ghost Cat and the Mysterious Shamisen (details), at 9.30 p.m. Both films are part of the Zipangu Fest which has toured London and other U.K. venues.
