MVM Licenses Broken Blade, Blu-ray Edition Planned (Updated)

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Series of six alternate-world robot films by Production I.G and Xebec.

MVM announced on its facebook page that it has licensed the six-part anime film series Broken Blade (Break Blade). Later, MVM commented: "Plans are to give [Broken Blade] a go on Blu Ray and if it sells well we might release some of our older, popular titles on Blu Ray. As usual it's all down to sales. We're planning on releasing it late summer, no fixed date or price yet - when I know it'll be on the site available for pre-order."

The films, which average a little over 50 minutes each, are based on Yunosuke Yoshinaga's alternate-world robot manga. Sentai Filmworks, which licensed Broken Blade in America, described the story:

In Cruzon, children are born with the ability to control quartz. This power allows them to levitate simple objects—or control enormous and complex mobile battle suits called Golems. But when an ancient Golem is discovered during the height of a brutal war, a Young King and his beautiful queen turn to Rygart Arrow. Though an “un-sorcerer”, Rygart can miraculously pilot this ancient and powerful weapon. But in war, school friends can turn into bitter enemies and allies have suspicious motives.

Production I.G and Xebec handled the animation. The chief director is Tetsuro Amino (Macross 7, Shiki) and the director is Nobuyoshi Habara (Negima!, Fafner), with Production I.G and Xebec handling the animation. Masashi Sogo (Bleach, Fairy Tail, Gantz) wrote the screenplay.

Flex Comix publishes the manga in Japan, while CMX Manga published three manga volumes in North America before DC Comics shut down the imprint last year.
