Only manga nominee for 32nd annual award; winners announced April 20

The Los Angeles Times newspaper announced the list of finalists for its 32nd Annual Book Prize on Tuesday, and it named Yūichi Yokoyama's manga Garden as the sole manga nominee in the Graphic Novel category.

The one-volume manga, which runs 328 pages, was released in North America by PictureBox in June. The book is an experimental piece involving a group of friends who break into a walled-off garden, and find themselves in a vast and alien world, full of inexplicable objects and machinery. It was reviewed positively by many book critics, including those at Publishers Weekly, Time, New York Magazine and Vice Magazine.

The other entries in the Graphic Novel category include:

  • I Will Bite You! And Other Stories by Joseph Lambert
  • Celluloid by Dave McKean
  • Finder: Voice by Carla Speed McNeil
  • Congress of the Animals by Jim Woodring

The prizes will be awarded at a public ceremony April 20 at University of Southern California (USC)'s Bovard Auditorium. Tickets will go on sale March 26.

Yokoyama's previous short story Book was nominated for an Will Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material — Japan in 2008 as part of a short story collection, but lost to Taiyo Matsumoto's Tekkonkinkreet.
