Kei Sugita Serializes Chōyaku Hyakunin Isshu: Uta Koi Parody Manga

The May issue of Media Factory's Monthly Comic Gene manga anthology premiered on Saturday Kei Sugita's spin-off Uta Hen, a parody of Sugita's own Chōyaku Hyakunin Isshu: Uta Koi historical josei manga series. The series of shorts comes with the disclaimer “Those who dislike parodies or wish to maintain the image of the original series please do not read further.”
The third volume of Sugita's Utakoi will be released April 20. More than 400,000 copies of the series have been printed. The manga tells the "super-liberal interpretation" of the Hyakunin Isshu anthology of poems that were written between the 7th and 13th centuries in Japan. The anthology features 100 romantic poems from 100 different poets such as The Tale of Genji's Murasaki Shikibu. The poems are also used as the basis for the karuta card game.
The manga will receive an anime adaptation this summer by TYO Animations directed by Kenichi Kasai (Nodame Cantabile, Bakuman.)
