Live-Action Himizu Film Wins at Terracotta Film Fest

The live-action film adaptation of Minoru Furuya's psychological drama manga Himizu won the Audience Award at the fourth annual Terracotta Far East Film Festival, which took place in London April 12-15. The event also screened Studio Ghibli's anime film From Up On Poppy Hill as well as the Japanese live-action films Monsters Club, The Grudge, Gyo, and The Woodman and the Rain.
Shion Sono (Suicide Circle, Strange Circus) wrote and directed this live-action Himizu adaptation. He (Suicide Circle, Strange Circus) revealed that he had to rewrite the film's story before shooting, due to the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake (Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) disaster and the resulting nuclear power accident.
Shōta Sometani (live-action Uso-tsuki Mii-kun to Kowareta Maa-chan, Always: Sunset on Third Street '64) stars as Yūichi Sumida, a third-year middle school boy who longs for a normal life, but a certain incident sets him on a descent into darkness. Fumi Nikaidō (Sono's Gama no Abura) plays Keiko Chazawa, Sumida's classmate.
Sono received the Deauville Asian Film Festival's Critics Award for the second consecutive year with Himizu last month. The film also competed and won at the Venice International Film Fest and played at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Himizu opened in theaters across Japan on January 14. Third Window Films will also release the film in theaters in the United Kingdom this month.
