First Berserk Film Chosen for in France's 2012 Annecy Fest

France's Annecy, the world's largest animation film festival, announced that Berserk Ōgon Jidai-Hen I: Haō no Tamago, Studio 4°C's first film out of a trilogy of adaptations of Kentarō Miura's Berserk manga, will be shown out of competition in the Feature Film category of the June 4-9 event. Studio 4°C and Toshiyuki Kubooka, the film's director, were last shown in the festival in 2009, when the "Shanghai Dragon" short from the Genius Party compilation was selected.
Annecy will also screen Katsuhiro Ōtomo's "Hi-no-youjin" or "Combustible" anime short, as well as Shin Hashimoto's "Beluga," Akihito Izuhara's "LI.LI.TA.AL," Mirai Mizue's "Modern No. 2," Florian Piento's French-Japanese production "The People Who Never Stop," Syuhei Morita's "Tsukumo," and Ayaka Nakata and Yuki Sakitani's "Yonalure: Moment to Moment" in the same Short Films category as "Hi-no-youjin." The first Blue Exorcist episode will be in the TV series category, while Masaki Okuda, Ryō Ōkawara, and Yutaro Ogawa's Art Path 2011 "Count Down" will be in the Advertising Films category. Several student films round out Japan's roster at the festival.
Berserk Ōgon Jidai-Hen I: Haō no Tamago opened in Japan on February 4. The film will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan on May 23. It has also been licensed for release in 16 countries around the world, including a North American release by Viz.
The second film in the series, Berserk Ōgon Jidai-Hen II: Doldrey Kōryaku (Berserk Golden Age Arc II: The Battle for Doldrey), is slated to be released in theaters in Japan on June 23. That film is scheduled to run for about 100 minutes and will focus on the epic battle by the Kingdom of Midland to retake Doldrey Castle from the Chuder Empire. Berserk Ōgon Jidai-Hen III: Kōrin (Berserk Golden Age Arc III: Descent) will open later in 2012 and run for about 110 minutes. In this film, the story "delves nonstop into the abyss of dark fantasy."
