De Agostini Japan's 41-issue mag to bundle complete TV anime on DVD

The publisher De Agostini Japan announced on Tuesday that it will launch the Ginga Tetsudo 999 DVD Collection (Galaxy Express 999 DVD Collection) magazine and anime DVD series on June 19. Each issue of the 41-volume set will include a DVD with three episodes of the Galaxy Express 999 television anime series and full-color magazine dedicated to the anime.

The magazine will include episode guide with a discussion of the anime's story, a production notes section with production materials from the anime's staff, and a scene check section with a discussion of the anime's well-known scenes. Each ten-page issue will also include background information on the original manga's creator Leiji Matsumoto and an art gallery with Matsumoto's illustrations.

The complete DVD set will include all 113 episodes of the television anime series and the Galaxy Express 999: Shōnen no Tabidachi to Wakare compilation television special, as well as the Ginga Tetsudo 999: Kimi wa Senshi no You ni Ikirareru ka!!, Ginga Tetsudo 999: Eien no Tabibito Emeraldas, and Ginga Tetsudo 999: Kimi wa Haha no You ni Aiseru ka!! television specials. Each DVD will run about 70 minutes. People who subscribe to the magazine will also receive bonus items such as a Galaxy Express 999 commuter pass case and four-piece character figure set.

De Agostini Japan will release a new volume of the magazine and DVD series every other week. The first issue will cost 790 yen (about US$9), and the remaining 40 volumes will each cost 1,790 yen (US$22).

The North American anime distributor S'more Entertainment confirmed in January that it has licensed the classic 1978-1981 television series from director Rintarō. The anime adapts Leiji Matsumoto's space opera manga of the same name.

The story follows a young orphan named Tetsuro as he travels with a mysterious woman named Maetel through the galaxy on a space train, in the hopes of obtaining a cybernetic body. The train stops at many planets along the way, often leading to adventures for the two.

Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu have been streaming the television anime series outside Japan since 2009. The original manga also inspired a 1979 film that Viz once licensed in North America along with its sequel Adieu Galaxy Express 999. Discotek released the first Galaxy Express 999 film on DVD in North America last year.

De Agostini Japan began streaming a 91-second promotional video for Galaxy Express 999 DVD Collection this week.
