Aniplex USA Confirms Blu-Ray Disc Release for Bakemonogatari TV Anime (Updated)

15-episode series to get N. American release this fall

The anime production company Aniplex of America confirmed at its panel at Fanime Con on Saturday that it will release the Bakemonogatari television anime series on Blu-ray Disc this fall.

Aniplex had announced in April that it would release the series in North America, but did not specify the release format at that time.

The 15-episode anime series adapts NisiOisin's Bakemonogatari light novels. The short stories in NisiOisin's two volumes of Bakemonogatari deal with a high school boy named Koyomi Araragi and strange students he encounters. ("Bakemonogatari" is a wordplay on the Japanese term bakemono for supernatural creatures and the term monogatari for stories.) The series originally aired in Japan in 2009.

Akiyuki Shinbo (ef: a tale of melodies., Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, MoonPhase, Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei, The SoulTaker) directed the series off scripts supervised by Fuyashi Tou (Zoku Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei). Akio Watanabe (Nurse Witch Komugi, The SoulTaker) adapted VOfan's original character designs for the Shaft animators. Tatsuya Oishi (opening animation director for Mahō Sensei Negima!: Shiroki Tsubasa Ala Alba, Maria Holic, Pani Poni Dash!) was the series director below Shinbo, while Satoru Kousaki (Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens, Lucky Star, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) composed the music.

Update: Aniplex's release of Bakemonogatari will be Blu-ray Disc only. The boxset will not be an import of the Japanese Blu-ray Disc boxset; it will instead be produced in house. There are no plans at this time to include an English dub. Aniplex also revealed that its re-release of The Garden of Sinners movie series on DVD will also be produced in house.
