Yowamushi Pedal Bicycling Manga Gets TV Anime in 2013

Wataru Watanabe's manga about high school otaku who becomes a bicycle racer

2013's combined 4th/5th issue of Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine is announcing on Thursday that a television anime adaptation of Wataru Watanabe's Yowamushi Pedal manga has been green-lit for next year. The story centers around Sakamichi Onoda, a high school otaku who loves figures from anime and games so much that he would ride his commuter bicycle to and from Tokyo's Akihabara shopping district in a 90-kilometer (about 60-mile) round trip over steep slopes. Onoda ends up joining the competitive sport of bicycle racing.

Watanabe launched the manga in the magazine in 2008, and Akita Shoten published the 26th compiled book volume earlier this month. The manga already inspired a stage play that ran in Tokyo this past February. The production company TOHO registered the domain yowapeda.com.
