Thunderbirds Creator Gerry Anderson Passes Away

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
British producer/writer/director's most famous work inspired 1982 Techno Voyager anime

Gerry Anderson, the creator of Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Space:1999 and many other puppet science-fiction television shows, passed away on Wednesday. He was 83. Anderson's son Jamie announced the news on his website, noting that his father passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Anderson's Thunderbirds series was remade into the Kagaku Kyujotai Techno Voyager television anime series in 1982, although he was not directly involved in the production. The English-dubbed version of the series was renamed to Thunderbirds 2086. Anderson was also the original creator of the 2003 FireStorm science-fiction television anime series, which was produced by Trans Arts Co. and Madhouse.

Anderson's most famous show, Thunderbirds, originally aired in the United Kingdom in 1965. He founded the company AP Films, which later became Century 21 Productions, in 1957, and the company worked on many marionette and live-action titles, including UFO, Space: 1999, Joe 90, and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons.

Anderson suffered from mixed dementia during the last two years of his life. His son Jamie has asked that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Society in his memory.
