Manga Studies Conference in London January 28

Free two-hour event at 6 p.m. at Birkbeck College.

The London Asia Pacific Cultural Studies Forum has announced a two-hour "Manga Studies" session on the evening of Monday January 28, to take place at Birkbeck College in Bloomsbury (map at link).

The session is free but attendees must register here.

According to the page, "This session is expected to be a multidisciplinary event that invites scholars from a range of fields to observe the diversity of manga consumption as popular culture, worldwide." The talks will be in English.

The line-up is:

6 p.m - 6.10: A Welcome from the Organizers (Dr Shinji Oyama and Dr. Mariko Murata)

6.10 - 6.30: Manga, Architecture, and Cities: Interpreting Space in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Dr. Ryuichi Tanigawa)

6.30 - 6.50: The Reception of Manga in the Republic of Korea: A Case Study on NARUTO (Dr. Chie Yamanaka)18:50-19:10 Barefoot Gen in Japan: War and Boys' Comics (Mr. Yu Ito)

(Short break)

7.20 - 7.40: How to Enjoy 'Yaoi' Texts: Manga Consumption of Female Otaku in Japan (Dr. Sonoko Azuma)

7.40 - 8.10 Discussion
