4-episode series to get bilingual BD/DVD release this year

North American anime distributor Discotek Media announced on Friday that it has licensed the Blue Submarine No. 6 video anime series. Discotek Media will release the series on remastered DVD sometime this year, and on Blu-ray Disc by the end of this year. The release will include Bandai Entertainment's English dub as well as the Japanese audio track with English subtitles.

Bandai Entertainment originally released the four-episode series on VHS in 1999 and on DVD in 2000. Mahiro Maeda (Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo) directed the series at Gonzo. Hiroshi Yamaguchi (Gurren Lagann, Sgt. Frog, Yukikaze) wrote the script for the series, and Range Murata (Last Exile, Shangri-La) and Takuhito Kusanagi (Ghost Slayers Ayashi, Samurai 7) were in charge of the original character designs.

The series, which adapts Satoru Ozawa's original manga, centers on the crew of Blue Submarine No. 6, who are out to defeat the scientist Jung Zorndyke. Zorndyke has created a new breed of beings that thrive on oceans and desire to destroy humans.
