Sony Europe Files for 'Panopticon' Trademark in Europe

Sony Computer Entertainment filed for a trademark on a symbol dubbed "Panopticon" in Europe on January 23. Sony listed the symbol's related services under three categories:
- Computer and video games; computer games software; computer software downloadable from the internet; computer software for hand held computer games equipment; computer game software for mobile phones; video game cartridges; memory cards; data storage devices; downloadable electronic publications; electronic games; parts and fittings for all the above.
- Toys and playthings; hand-held computer games equipment (not adapted with TV receivers); parts and accessories for hand-held computer games equipment (not adapted with TV receivers); card games; board games; arcade video game machines; video game apparatus; parts and fittings for all the above.
- Entertainment; electronic games services provides by means of the internet; games services provided on-line from a computer network.
Sony is filing for the trademark in both English and French.
A "panopticon" was originally coined as a hypothetical prison system by English philosopher and social theorist Jeremy Bentham in the late 1700s. It was designed to allow a watchmen monitor all the inmates without their knowledge. The word is derived from Greek and translates as "all-seeing."
