Kenji Kamiyama's 3d animated re-imagining of Shōtarō Ishinomori's classic science fiction manga Cyborg 009 to be part of Madman's 2013 Reel Anime season in Australia;

Madman Entertainment announced 009 Re:Cyborg's acquisition and inclusion as part of Reel Anime 2013 at Supanova Pop Culture Expo on the Gold Coast and made the news known to the world through their facebook page. Apart from the announcement there is further information is publicly available at this time.

009 Re:Cyborg

The story begins when skyscrapers in London, Moscow, Berlin, and New York are destroyed by simultaneous bombings, causing widespread panic throughout the world. A group of nine cyborg fighters is reunited, but their former leader is living alone in Tokyo with his memories wiped.

The movie is a re-imagining of Shōtarō Ishinomori's Cyborg 009. In the original manga, the secret Black Ghost organization transforms nine unsuspecting humans into cyborgs. However the nine cyborgs turn on their masters and protect the rest of humanity from Black Ghost's plans for world war.

The manga has been adapted several times, with three Cyborg 009 television anime series premiered in 1968, 1979, and 2001 and three theatrical anime films in 1966, 1967, and 1980. Another director with Ghost in the Shell and Production I.G ties, Mamoru Oshii, directed his own 3D short of Cyborg 009 in 2010 with sponsor Panasonic.

Tokyopop published the original Cyborg 009 manga in North America and Columbia Tristar and Cartoon Network brought the 2001-2002 television anime version to the United States. The anime was also screened on Foxtel's Cartoon Network and released on DVD by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in Australia.

This latest adaptation was scripted and directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East, and Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit) which is also Kenji's first fully 3D animated movie. The film was produced by Tomohiko Ishii in a co-production between Production I.G and SANZIGEN Animation Studio. Character designs were handled by Gatou Asou (Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit), art direction by Yūsuke Takeda (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and music by Kenji Kawai (Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit, Eden of the East). The film was distributed in Japan by T-Joy in October 2012.
