Miyazaki's The Wind Rises Does Not Win Awards at Venice

posted on by Egan Loo

Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's The Wind Rises film did not win awards at the 70th Venice International Film Festival in Italy on Saturday. The top honor, the Golden Lion, went to the documentary film Sacro GRA by Italian director Gianfranco Rosi. Sion Sono's Why Don't You Play in Hell? film played in the festival's "Orizzonti" category but did not win.

Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci led the judging committee that also included his Last Emperor composer, Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto (Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honnêamise, Appleseed).

Studio Ghibli President Koji Hoshino announced last Sunday at the festival that Miyazaki is retiring from the production of feature-length films. Miyazaki won a Golden Osella for Technical Achievement with Howl's Moving Castle at the festival in 2004, and then received a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2005.
