Anime Island Convention Launches Crowdfunding Campaign

posted on by Jon Hayward
AICon has launched a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo in a bid to secure a larger venue for their 2014 event.

Anime Island Convention (AICon) is Tasmania's longest running pop culture convention. The event primarily focuses on anime but it has a hefty focus on Cosplay events, theatre sports and a artistic focus unique to AICon. The organising committee (Digivisipop) runs two AICon associated events a year, the main event in March and MAICon in September. .

The dates for 2014 were announced in May to be the Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th of March at the Wrest Point Convention Centre, Hobart, Tasmania.

The main focus of the IndieGoGo campaign is to fund the move to the West Point Convention Centre and potentially handle a little advertising. AICon has traditionally been held at the University of Tasmania, Hobart Campus in the Stanley Burbury Theatre but due to the amount of attendees AICon now receives (1559 in 2013) they need to move.

The campaign has many levels, you can pre-purchase a AICon 2014 weekend pass for $65, a Golden Ticket for $150, life-time ticket to AICon and MAICon for $1000 and if you have a spare $30,000 sitting around you recieve all previous tiers and get to decide the theme for AICon 2015 (with committee guidance). There are also merchandise, advertising and accommodation tiers available.

The campaign was launched on the 9th of September 2013 and will run until the 8th of November 2013. It must be noted that this campaign is listed as flexible funding and that all funds raised go to AICon regardless of reaching their target. At the time of writing this article the campaign is listed at $1,347 of their $7,500 goal (~17%).
