Sentai Filmworks Adds 3rd Season of Phi-Brain Anime

3rd season of Sunrise's puzzle-action series gets home video release in 2014

North American anime licensing company Sentai Filmworks announced on Monday that it has licensed the third season of the Phi Brain - Kami no Puzzle television anime series. Sentai Filmworks will release the series on home video next year after streaming the series through "select digital outlets." Crunchyroll is currently streaming the series as it airs.

The anime's first season follows Kaito, a puzzle-loving freshman at the private high school named "Root Academy." He is selected as a candidate for "Phi Brain" for his extraordinary mental skills. One day, he and his childhood friend Nonoha tackle the "unsolvable puzzle" hidden in the underground ruins near the school. They are guided by the mobile device given to Kaito by the student council president. In the second season, the story continues to revolve around the Orpheus bangle and Phi Brain, but the puzzle battles heat up.

In the third season, a girl named Reitsell (voiced by Minori Chihara) suddenly challenges Kaito and his friends to a puzzle. At the same time, a man named Enigma (Jouji Nakata), who is in charge of the genius "Master Brain" that is attacking Root Academy with a puzzle, also appears. Reitsell and Enigma are both connected to Kaito's master, Jin Makata, who has lost his memories, but remembers Reitsell.

The third season premiered in Japan on October 6. Hirotaka Endo is returning from the second season to direct the third season, and Mayori Sekijima and Junichi Satō are working again on the series composition. The cast is returning from previous seasons. neko is performing the opening theme song "Destiny," and voice actors Shintarō Asanuma, Kaori Shimizu, Jun Fukuyama, Kōki Miyata, and Satsuki Yukino are performing the ending theme song "Say Yeah!" as the group Tensai Terrace-gumi.

Crunchyroll streamed the first two series outside Japan. Sentai Filmworks licensed both seasons for North America. The company has released the first season on home video, and released the first half of the second season, Phi-Brain - Puzzle of God: The Orpheus Order, on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in July.
