Demon King Daimao Manga to End Next Month

posted on by Sarah Nelkin
Original light novels also inspired anime; manga began in Champion RED in 2008

The January issue of Akita Shoten's Champion RED magazine announced last week that manga creator and illustrator Sōichi Itō's adaptation of Shōtarō Mizuki's Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaō (Demon King Daimao) manga will end in the February issue. Itō is also the illustrator for Mizuki's light novel series.

The story of "love, magic, and battles" revolves around Akuto Sai, a boy who aims to become part of his country's highest order of magicians and contribute to society. On the day he is admitted into the Constant Magical Academy, his aptitude test predicts the following: "Future Occupation … Devil King." Thus begins his difficult school life in which he is resented by his studious female class head, desired by a girl with mysterious powers, and watched over by a beautiful female android.

The light novel series also inspired an anime in 2010, and Crunchyroll and The Anime Network streamed the anime as it aired in Japan. Sentai Filmworks licensed and released the series on DVD and Blu-ray in North America.

Itō began the manga in the magazine in 2008, and Akita Shoten published the fourth compiled volume in Japan last year. Hobby Japan also published the 12th volume (cover seen at left) of Mizuki's novel series in Japan last year, and the synopsis hints that the story is heading towards the finale.
