Australia's Madman Ent. Adds Bayonetta: Bloody Fate Film

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Australian anime distributor Madman Entertainment announced on Friday that it licensed the anime film Bayonetta: Bloody Fate for release next year. Gonzo's adaptation of Platinum Games' Bayonetta franchise debuted in 10 theaters throughout Japan on November 23, and it will run for two weeks.

Madman Entertainment describes the story:

Her name is Bayonetta. She is one of ‘the witches’ – a huntress of Angels – and this is her only memory of the past. When she receives information that a clue may lie in waiting in the sacred city of Vigrid, Bayonetta sets out on a perilous journey.

En route, Bayonetta experiences a series of strange encounters with a mysterious lady who holds cryptic hints about her past, a male journalist who implicates Bayonetta in the death of his father and a young girl who openly adores her, referring to her as ‘mommy’.

What secrets do Bayonetta's lost memory hold and what fate lies in waiting?

Fuminori Kizaki (Afro Samurai, Basilisk, Super Street Fighter IV, X-Men) directed, storyboarded, and shot Bayonetta: Bloody Fate off a screenplay by Mitsutaka Hirota (The Prince of Tennis II, Tetsujin 28-gō Gao!, X-Men). Ai Yokoyama designed the characters based on Mari Shimazaki's original game art. (Shimazaki also supervised the project.) Hiroya Iijima (Afro Samurai, Tiger & Bunny) designed the angels, while mechanical designers Katanao Akai and Takashi Watabe (new Evangelion films, Ghost in the Shell, Super Street Fighter IV) were in charge of the creatures and guns, respectively. Unlike even the Japanese version of the original game, the anime film has Japanese voices.

Platinum Games and Sega released the first Bayonetta action game about a shape-shifting, fighting witch on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in Japan in October 2009 and then in North America in January 2010. Platinum Games is now developing Bayonetta 2 for the Wii U.
