Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea streaming now with retail release planned

Anime distributor NIS America confirmed on Friday that it acquired the Nagi no Asukara anime series for retail release under the title Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea. NIS America describes the story in this original animation project from P.A. Works and ASCII Media Works' Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh magazine:

Long ago, all humans lived in the ocean. But some who longed for the land abandoned the water, and cast off the special raiments granted to them by the sea god to adapt them to life under the sea...

Though mankind was divided into sea and land dwellers, each with different ways of thinking, they were all still fellow humans, and they continued to maintain contact as time went on.

Hikari Sakishima, Manaka Mukaido, Chisaki Hiradaira, and Kaname Isaki live in an undersea village, while Tsumugu Kihara lives on land.

When these land and sea dwellers meet for the first time during their second year of middle school, their hearts begin to undulate like the tides.

The youthful fantasy tale of these young people's lives unfolds in a strange and beautiful world.

Kana Hanazawa and Natsuki Hanae lead the cast. Hanazawa plays Manaka Mukaido, a middle school girl who is indecisive and prone to crying. Hanae plays Hikari Sakishima, Manaka's caring childhood friend. Additional cast members include Kaito Ishikawa, Ryota Ohsaka, Ai Kayano, Mikako Komatsu, and Kaori Ishihara as Tsumugu Kihara, Kaname Isaki, Chisaki Hiradaira, Miuna Shiodome, and Sayu Hisanuma, respectively.

Toshiya Shinohara (Black Butler, The Book of Bantorra) is directing off scripts supervised by Mari Okada (Black Butler, The Book of Bantorra, anohana, Hana-Saku Iroha). Buriki (Haganai, Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl) is in charge of the original character designs. Ray performed the opening theme song, and Nagi Yanagi performed the ending theme.

The series premiered in Japan on October 3. Crunchyroll is streaming the anime as it airs in Japan, and Hulu is also now streaming the anime. The launch details of the retail release will be announced in the future.
