Wandering Son Manga Named on ALA's Rainbow List for Children & Teens

Manga chosen for list of works with gay, lesbian, bisexual, transexual, & queer themes in 3rd straight year

The American Library Association's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) selected Takako Shimura's Wandering Son manga for its Rainbow List. The yearly Rainbow List includes fiction and graphic novels focusing on gay, lesbian, bisexual, transexual, and queer themes for children and teens. Wandering Son has been chosen for the list three years in a row and was the first manga to ever be included. It was previously chosen by the ALA's Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) division as one of the top 10 graphic novels for teens in 2012.

The story of Wandering Son centers around a feminine fifth-grade boy named Shūichi Nitori. On the first day at his new school, he is mistaken for his 6th-grade sister. He happens to sit next to Yoshino Takatsuki, a girl who wishes she was a boy. Both of them have secrets they cannot tell anyone.

Shimura ended the manga last July and Enterbrain published the 15th and final compiled volume in Japan last August. Fantagraphics is releasing the manga in North America, and the company plans to publish the seventh hardcover volume in August.

The manga inspired an 11-episode television anime series from AIC that aired on Fuji TV's late night Noitamina programming block in 2011. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired.

Shimura will launch her Musume no Iede (The Daughter's Running-Away) in the April issue of Shueisha's Jump X magazine on March 10.
