Man to Be Charged for Cutting Up & Selling K-ON! Trailer Reel

Former projectionist accused of auctioning pieces of trailer's film online

Japanese police sent the case of a former projectionist to the prosecutors after he allegedly cut up the actual film reels for the K-ON! movie's trailer and auctioned them online. The suspect, who is in his 40s, worked in a theater in Hakodate City. In October 2011, two months before the movie would open in Japan, he allegedly cut up the trailer's film reel and put the strips on online auctions. The suspect is accused of violating Japan's Copyright Law.

When people involved with the movie discovered the film strips online, they submitted a winning bid for one. They then contacted the police, and the suspect reportedly admitted to the accusations when identified.

The movie itself opened in Japan in December 2011.
