ComiXology Removes In-App Store in iPad/iPhone App

posted on by Egan Loo

As of Saturday, Comixology is no longer accepting in-app purchases in the new iOS version of its digital comic reading software for Apple iPad and iPhone. In-app purchases are still available through a new system (that goes directly through Comixology instead of Google Play) in the Android version of the app. In-app purchases are also still available in the specialized Amazon Kindle variant of the app.

All users can still buy comics on the Comixology website, and Comixology is offering a US$5 credit "to all those who have purchased through the Comixology platform in the past."

Amazon announced that it acquired Comixology earlier this month, but the acquisition will not take effect until the end of the quarter. Like the new Comixology app in iOS, Amazon's Kindle app on iOS does not support in-app purchases. Apple requires iOS apps to give a percentage of in-app sales to Apple.

The platform offers multiple manga and comic book titles. Comixology partnered with Viz Media Europe and Viz's French division Kazé to offer its catalog, as well as Seven Seas Entertainment titles and some Tokyopop properties.
