The Kingdom of Dreams & Madness Ghibli Documentary Opens in NYC

posted on by Rachel Mahoney
Film to be available via download on December 9

The Studio Ghibli documentary Kingdom of Dreams & Madness (Yume to Kyōki no Ōkoku) opened on Friday at the IFC Center in New York City, presented by GKids. The show listings on GKids' website run until December 4.

GKids signed the licensing deal with Studio Ghibli at the Annecy Animation Film Festival before the film's screening at the festival in June.

Yomiuri Documentary award-winning director Mami Sunada (Ending Note: Death of a Japanese Salaryman) directed the film, and it follows Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki as he worked on the Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) film, director Isao Takahata as he worked on the film Kaguya-hime no Monogatari (The Tale of Princess Kaguya), and producer Toshio Suzuki as he worked on both projects.

GKids will release the film via digital download on December 9, and on DVD and Video on Demand on January 27. American distributor Cinedigm lists the DVD for US$29.99 with a preorder date of December 12. The DVD will have subtitles and will contain extras.

Kingdom of Dreams and Madness premiered in Japan last year. The film already screened in Toronto, San Diego, Pittsburgh, and Los Angeles.

GKids is also currently showing The Tale of the Princess Kaguya in several theaters across the United States, with showtimes listed until December 19 in certain theaters.
