Ninja Slayer Gets Smartphone 'Ninja Battle RPG' in Japan

"Translation" team supervises free-to-play app for iOS/Android

AltPlus announced that it signed a licensing contract with the Ninja Slayer From Animation's production committee to adapt the anime into a smartphone app. The "translation" team of the original novel project is supervising the tentatively named Ninja Slayer game app to ensure that it faithfully recreates the story world. AltPlus has not revealed many details about the game, other than it will be a free-to-download, (tentatively planned) "ninja battle RPG" for Apple's App Store and Google Play store with in-game item purchases.

King Records describes the franchise's story:

Kenji Fujikido is a salaryman whose wife and child were killed in a ninja turf war. In a brush with his own death, Fujikido is possessed by an enigmatic ninja soul known as Naraku Ninja. Fujikido cheats death and becomes "Ninja Slayer" -a Grim Reaper destined to kill evil ninja, committed to a personal war of vengeance. Set in the dystopian underworld of Neo-Saitama, Ninja Slayer takes on Soukai Syndicate ninja in mortal combat.
Narrator: Ninja. A ninja is a demigod entity that controlled society during the Heian period with karate. That truth was forgotten. However, transcending a few thousand years of time, an evil ninja soul was released in the darkness of Neo Saitama! Now, a mysterious ninja soul binds itself to a salaryman who lost his wife and child in a ninja battle! This was the birth of Ninja Slayer, the grim reaper of Neo Saitama!

The story was originally posted piecemeal on Twitter by Japanese "translators" Yū Honda and Leika Sugi, allegedly translating the work of American authors "Bradley Bond and Philip Ninj@ Morzez." After the story grew in popularity, Enterbrain published the first Japanese-translated volume in print, Ninja Slayer: Neo Saitama in Flames, in September 2012. The story then inspired comic adaptations from Enterbrain and Kodansha (including Kōtarō Sekine's Ninja Slayer Kills in Shōnen Sirius), as well as an audio drama with Toshiyuki Morikawa as the title character.

The anime will premiere on the Japanese streaming website Niconico on April 16 at 11:00 p.m. JST.
