Terra Formars Manga Gets New Novel

Author Yumeaki Hirayama (Monologues of Universal Transverse Mercator) will begin serializing a novel based on Yū Sasuga and Kenichi Tachibana's Terra Formars manga in the February issue of Shueisha's Miracle Jump magazine on January 19. The novel will be titled Terra Formars Lost Mission II: Hibo e no Kikan.
The story takes place at the same time that Shokichi, Hiruma, and the others are headed to Mars. It follows a nine-year-old girl who stows away on a research vessel and seems to want to go to Mars.
Shueisha published the first novel Terra Formars Lost Mission I: Tsuki no Kioku by Akira Higashiyama (Naruto: Kakashi's Story) in August 2014. The original manga also inspired the Terra Formars Outer Mission novel series.
A story from Hirayama's Monologues of Universal Transverse Mercator inspired the CG-animated film Egg Man.
Sasuga and Tachibana launched their Terra Formars manga in 2011. Viz Media is releasing the manga in North America, and will release the ninth English volume on Tuesday. The manga has inspired multiple spinoffs by many authors, including Terra For Police, Terra Formars wa Oyasumi Desu., Oshiete! Michelle Kyōkan, Terra Formars Gaiden Rain Hard, and Terra Formars Asimov. The Terra Formars Keiji Onizuka manga spinoff began in Miracle Jump earlier this month.
The series has been adapted into a 13-episode television anime series that premiered in Japan in September 2014. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan. A sequel series titled Terraformars Revenge will premiere in April 2016.
The manga is also inspiring a live-action film directed by Takashi Miike (live-action films of Ichi the Killer, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Yatterman, Tokyo Tribe, As the Gods Will, Crows, Mogura no Uta). Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill) penned the screenplay for the film. The film will open in Japan on April 29.
