Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV CG Film's Staff, Japanese Theatrical Screenings Revealed

Square Enix announced on Thursday that the Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV feature-length CG film will screen in theaters in Japan in July. Aniplex will distribute the film. Pre-orders for tickets to the screenings go on sale on April 23.

The official Japanese website for the film also reveals that Final Fantasy XV game director Hajime Tabata is producing the film. Takeshi Nozue (Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children co-director, co-producer) is directing the film, and Takashi Hasegawa (1999 GTO film, Crows Explode) is writing the script. John Graham is composing the music, and Yoko Shimomura (who is composing the music for the game) is composing the main theme.

Square Enix describes the film's story as follows:

The magical kingdom of Lucis is home to the hallowed Crystal, but the menacing empire of Niflheim will stop at nothing to make it theirs. War has raged between the two for as long as most can remember.

King Regis of Lucis commands an elite force of soldiers dubbed the Kingsglaive. Wielding their king's magic, Nyx Ulric and his fellow glaives stand before the crown city of Insomnia, fighting to stay the inexorable advance of Niflheim's imperial army.

Before the overwhelming military might of the empire, King Regis can only salvage his kingdom by accepting anultimatum—he must cede all lands outside the crown city, and see his son, Prince Noctis, wed to Lady Lunafreya, the former princess of Tenebrae now captive of Niflheim.

As the war of wills rages, the machinations of Niflheim transform Insomnia into an awe-inspiring battleground, pulling Nyx into a struggle for the very survival of the kingdom.

The Blu-ray Disc containing the film will ship in Japan on September 30, the same day the game ships, for 4,800 yen (about US$43). The disc will have Japanese and English audio and Japanese subtitles. The Blu-ray Disc and DVD for the Brotherhood Final Fantasy XV web anime series will also ship on September 30 for 4,000 yen (US$36) and 3,000 yen (about US$27). The disc will have Japanese audio and English subtitles.

Square Enix will also release the film and the web anime together in a Film Collections Box with an artbook and bonus discs for 12,000 yen (about US$107). The Film Collections Box can also come with either the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version of the game for a total of 20,000 yen (about US$178).

The English website for the CG film lists that the film is "coming soon to Blu-ray and digital."

The story of Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV takes place during the game's storyline, and follows what happens to King Regis after Noctis leaves on his trip with his friends. The film will star Aaron Paul as a new character and protagonist called Nyx, a Glaive and member of the elite task force known as the Kingsglaive. Lena Headey will also star as Lunafreya, and Sean Bean as King Regis. The film's staff have not yet revealed the Japanese voice cast.

Square Enix announced the film and the Brotherhood Final Fantasy XV prequel anime on Wednesday. The first episode of the prequel anime is streaming on YouTube and Crunchyroll.
