Tatsunoko Productions' Hurricane Polymar Anime Gets Live-Action Film

Power Rangers' Koichi Sakamoto directs film starring Junpei Mizobata

Anime studio Tatsunoko Productions announced on Tuesday that its 1974 anime Hurricane Polymar is getting a live-action film adaptation. The film is slated to open at Tokyo's Shinjuku Wald 9 and other theaters in May 2017 as part of the celebration of Tatsunoko Productions' 55th anniversary.

Junpei Mizobata (live-action Hana-Kimi, Detective Conan) will star as the title character. Yuki Yamada, Mikie Hara, and Yurina Yanagi also have roles in the film.

Kōichi Sakamoto (Ultraman Ginga S, 009-1: The End of the Beginning) is directing the film, and Shinsuke Ōnishi (Ultraman Cosmos, Daimajin Kanon) is writing the scripts. Sakamoto is a Jackie Chan fan who became a stunt actor in America. He served as a stunt coordinator, producer, and director for much of the Power Rangers franchise. This projects marks his first time working on an adaptation of an anime.

The original anime series centers on Takeshi Yoroi (voiced by Kazuyuki Sogabe), a man who transforms into superhero Hurricane Polymar. The super-powered suit of his superhero identity can transform into one of five vehicles in order to fight crime.

The 1974 television anime inspired the 1996 New Hurricane Polymar video anime project. Anime Sols streamed the original anime series, and Urban Vision and Discotek Media released the video anime in North America.

Other parts of Tatsunoko Productions' 55th anniversary celebration include its Infini-T Force "full 3DCG" anime and its Time Bokan 24 television anime.
