Yo-kai Watch Shadowside Anime Film Stays at #2 in 2nd Weekend at Box Office

Kamen Rider, Fullmetal Alchemist, Girls und Panzer das Finale stay in top 10

Yo-kai Watch Shadowside: Oni-ō no Fukkatsu (Yo-kai Watch Shadowside: The Return of the Oni King), the fourth film in the Yōkai Watch franchise, stayed at #2 at the Japanese box office for the December 23-24 weekend. The film earned 226,738,400 yen (about US$2,011,169) from December 22-24, and has earned a total of 689,731,100 yen (US$6,117,914). The new film is expected to earn 2.5 billion yen (US$22 million).

New to the film is the ability for yo-kai to transform into "lightside" and "shadowside" forms. In these forms, yo-kai show different personalities, abilities, and appearances. Jibanyan, Komasan, Whisper, Nurarihyon, Lord Enma, and Slimamander returned in the film. Characters from Shigeru Mizuki's GeGeGe no Kitarō manga also appear in the film. LEVEL-5 president and CEO and Yōkai Watch creator Akihiro Hino oversaw production of the film, as well as provided the original concept and wrote the script.

The Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FINAL Build & Ex-Aid with Legend Rider crossover film dropped from #5 to #6 in its third weekend, and earned 111,533,500 (about US$989,302) from December 22-24. The film has earned a cumulative total of 810,735,600 yen (about US$7,191,224). The film opened on December 9 in 330 theaters.

The live-action film of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist manga dropped from #7 to #9 in its fourth weekend, earning 43,377,600 yen (about US$384,759) from December 22-24. The film has earned a cumulative 912,396,950 yen (about US$8,092,960). The film had opened on December 1 on about 400 screens in Japan, including on IMAX and 4DX screens.

The first film in the six-film Girls und Panzer das Finale anime project dropped from #8 to #10 in its third weekend, and earned 37,058,800 yen (about US$328,711) from Friday to Sunday. The film has earned a cumulative total of 341,884,380 yen (about US$3,032,514). The film opened in Japan on December 9 in 59 theaters. The new film features new characters from BC Freedom High School as they engage in a winter battle.
