Film based on manga about 3 boys who start extortion racket stars Ryō Katō, Mahiro Takasugi, Daichi Watanabe

Kodansha announced on Friday that a live-action film adaptation of Daisuke Suzuki and Keisuke Hiya's Gangoose manga has been green-lit, and is slated for a fall 2018 debut. Yū Irie is directing the film.

The cast includes (left to right in picture above):

  • Ryō Katō as Kazuki, the group's expert in tools, and who does his job with pride. He has lived apart from his younger sister for most of his life, and is now trying to get back to her.
  • Mahiro Takasugi as Saike, the group's intel man and planner
  • Daichi Watanabe as Takeo, the group's driver

The manga centers on three boys named Kazuki, Saike, and Takeo, united by their shared experience of parental abuse and spending their youth in reform school. They decide that in order to survive, they need to become criminals, and embark on an extortion racket together.

Reporter and writer Suzuki (no relation to the OniAi writer) and artist Hiya launched the manga in Kodansha's Morning magazine in 2013, and ended it in January 2017. Kodansha published the manga's 16th and final compiled book volume last April. The manga contains situations that are based on true stories based on information that Suzuki had collected. Suzuki himself served as a crime reporter for 13 years, and has written numerous non-fiction books based on crime and poverty in Japan.
