Film about foreign woman living in poor Japanese village stars Ken Yasuda

Shogakukan opened a website on Wednesday to announce that Hideki Arai's Itoshi no Irene (Irene of Love) manga is inspiring live-action film adaptation. The film will open in Japan in fall 2018, and will be the first time one of Arai's manga is adapted for film.

Keisuke Yoshida (live-action Silver Spoon, Himeanōru) is directing the film and penning the script. The film stars Ken Yasuda as main character Iwao Shishido.

The film centers on the life of a foreign woman named Irene who arrives at a poor town in Japan, as well as the people of that town.

Arai published the manga in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits magazine from 1995 to 1996. Shogakukan published six compiled book volumes for the manga. Ohta Publishing reprinted the manga in two collected volumes in 2010 and 2011.
