'Pretty' Shōjo Idol Franchise Gets New Crossover Film on May 5

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda

The company syn Sophia announced on Tuesday that its Pretty Series idol franchise will get a new film titled Gekijōban PriPara & Kiratto Pri☆Chan: Kira Kira Memorial Live (PriPara & Kiratto Pri☆Chan The Movie ~Sparkling Memorial Live~) on May 5. Avex Pictures is streaming a teaser for the film.

The film will feature characters from the earlier Pretty Rhythm games and anime, as well as PriPara, Idol Time PriPara, and the upcoming Kiratto Pri☆Chan. The above visual features the characters Aira Harune, Mia Ageha, and Naru Ayase from the various Pretty Rhythm television anime; Laala Manaka from PriPara; Yui Yumekawa from Idol Time PriPara; and Mirai Momoyama and Emo Moegi from Kiratto Pri☆Chan.

Nobutaka Yoda (Tobidasu PriPara ~Miina de Mezase! Idol Grand Prix) is directing the film at 10 Gauge, with Hiroko Fukuda (Uchi no Oochopus, Amanchu! Advance) penning the script.

The Pretty Series began with syn Sophia's Pretty Rhythm: Mini Skirt arcade game in 2010. The game inspired four television anime series, as well as anime film. The sequel game PriPara (Prism Paradise) launched in 2014. The first anime series inspired by the game premiered in July 2014. The franchise's first film, Gekijō-ban PriPara Mi~nna Atsumare! Prism Tours, premiered in March 2015, and the second TV anime season premiered in April 2015. The second anime film, Tobidasu PriPara ~Miina de Mezase! Idol Grand Prix (Spring Out PriPara ~Aim for the Top, Eeeeveryone! Idol Grand Prix), premiered in Japan in October 2015. The anime's third film, PriPara Mi~nna no Akogare Let's Go PriPari (PriPara Eeeeveryone's Longing Let's Go PriPari), premiered in March 2016, and the third television anime season followed in April 2016. The fourth anime series, titled Idol Time PriPara, premiered in April 2017, and is currently airing.

A new anime titled Kiratto Pri☆Chan will premiere in April. While the anime is not directly a sequel to the PriPara franchise, it is the second part of syn Sophia's "Pretty Series New Project," which involves both the Pretty Rhythm anime and the loose followup PriPara. The previously announced "Pretty All Friends Project" commemorates the overall Pretty Series franchise's 10-year anniversary, which will take place on 2020.

The Pretty Series franchise also includes KING OF PRISM by PrettyRhythm and King of Prism: PRIDE the HERO, two anime films that opened in Japan in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Unlike the main Pretty Rhythm and PriPara series, which focuses on female characters, the two films focused on male characters.
