MVM To Drop DVD Format

posted on by Andrew Osmond
MVM owner Tony Allen foresees MVM dropping format in Q4 2018

The website Anime Independent has posted an interview with Tony Allen, the owner of MVM Entertainment, who says he sees MVM dropping DVD as a format from the fourth quarter of 2018.

The interview refers to a recent incident in which MVM changed its planned Blu-ray/DVD combo edition box of Flip Flappers to a Blu Ray-only release, because its partners were dropping the DVD format.

In the interview, Allen says, "We all suffer the same problem of minimum print runs on two formats where sales are then split across those formats and often leaving us large quantities of stock."

He cites the rising costs of keeping "unsold and slow moving stock", describing the overall situation as "a repeat of the old VHS / DVD position."

Allen adds that new anime releases are split 60-40 in favour of Blu-ray, and that 'fan' titles also have stronger Blu-ray sales, though back catalogue titles do sell better on DVD.

Although MVM has "solo authored" some anime titles for DVD in the past, Allen says this has been expensive to do, and that he is coming round to the view that, "If there is only one format available then it will be purchased."
