Original producer, designers tease 22-year-old Taichi/Tai, Yamato/Matt

The "Digimon Kanshasai 2018 -Special Meeting in Odaiba-" event announced in Tokyo on Sunday that a new anime film project, tentatively titled Gekijō-ban Digimon Adventure (Digimon Adventure the Movie), is in the works. The new film project is part of the overall 20th anniversary celebration of the franchise.

Hiromi Seki, Toei Animation's original producer for the Digimon anime projects, is serving as the supervisor of the new film project. Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru is also returning from the first Digimon anime projects as the new film project's character designer. Kenji Watanabe is designing the Digimon monsters for the new project, as he has done for the previous Digimon projects.

Sunday's event featured a visual of a now 22-year-old Taichi Yagami, the protagonist (renamed "Tai Kamiya" in the English dub) of the first Digimon anime and Digimon Adventure tri., and Yamato Ishida ("Matt").

The Digimon franchise launched in Japan in June 1997 with a line of portable virtual pet game devices. The first film and television anime project, Digimon Adventure, premiered in March 1999 and spawned six more series from the direct sequel Digimon Adventure 02 to 2016-2017's Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters. In addition, several more anime projects ran in theaters, including the recently concluded Digimon Adventure tri. film series.
