Godzilla: King of the Monsters Drops to #7, Detective Pikachu to #13 in U.S.

Godzilla earns US$8.11 million in 3rd weekend

Legendary Pictures' Godzilla sequel film Godzilla: King of the Monsters earned an estimated US$8,105,000 to rank at #7 in the in the United States box office in its third weekend, a 48% drop from its second weekend. The film has earned an estimated total of US$245,800,000 in the foreign market, for an estimated total worldwide gross of US$339,488,172.

The film was originally slated for March 22, but was rescheduled to open on May 31. The film earned US$49 million in the United States in its opening weekend.

Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Super 8, Bloodline), Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, The Conjuring, Bates Motel), and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) star in the film as a father, mother, and daughter. Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Letters from Iwo Jima, Inception) and Sally Hawkins (Paddington, Blue Jasmine) return from the 2014 film.

Rob Letterman's live-action Pokémon Detective Pikachu film earned an estimated US$1,280,000 to rank at #13 in its fifth weekend in the United States. The film has earned an estimated cumulative total of US$140,788,081 in the United States, and an estimated US$279,500,000 internationally, for an estimated cumulative total of US$420,288,081 worldwide.

The film had the highest U.S. opening weekend box office for any film adaptation of a video game (unadjusted for inflation), with its US$54 million opening weekend earnings topping Lara Croft Tomb Raider's US$47.7 million in 2001.

The film opened in Japan on May 3 at #3, below Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire and Avengers: Endgame.
