TV Tokyo's Animation Division Reports Increase in Profits in 1st Half of Fiscal Year 2019

Japanese television network TV Tokyo published on Wednesday its earnings for fiscal year 2019 (April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020) during the second quarter ending on September 30. TV Tokyo's animation division earned 11.6 billion yen, or 16% of the company's total sales, an increase of 19.4% from the same period last year. This number exceeded the 10 billion yen mark in half a year for the first time. The forecast for the full fiscal year is 21.926 billion yen (about US$203 million).
The company cites the growth of overseas business as a factor for its animation business' strong performance. The company reported domestic sales of 3.359 billion yen (about US$31 million), an increase of 1.5%, and overseas sales of 8.277 billion yen (about US$77 million), an increase of 28.6%. TV Tokyo sales are strong in Asia, particularly China, and North America. Sales for the Naruto franchise's games were large in China. As a result, the overseas sales of the company's animation business amounted to 71.1%.

TV Tokyo's subsidiary anime channel AT-X reported sales of 2.798 billion yen (about US$26 million), an increase of 5.8%. The number of subscribers to AT-X continues to decline.
Overall, TV Tokyo reported net sales of 71.557 billion yen (about US$662 million), a 0.7% decrease from the same period last year. TV Tokyo also reported an operating income of 1.430 billion yen (about US$13 million), which is a 33.6% decrease, and an ordinary income of 1.390 billion yen (about US$13 million), which is a 33.1% decrease. The company's net income for the period was 386 million yen (about US$52 million), a 67.1% decrease.
