Kunihiko Ikuhara's series will be released in three separate Blu-ray parts on July 13, also including movie

Anime Limited has announced details of its upcoming release of Kunihiko Ikuhara's Revolutionary Girl Utena.

It will be released on Blu-ray in three separate parts, all released on July 13. Part 1 will contain the first 12 episodes, and Part 2 will carry parts 13 to 24. Part 3 will carry parts 25 to 39, and also Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie.

Parts 1 and 2 will each contain a poster and five art cards. Part 3 will contain numerous interviews with the crew and the English and Japanese voice casts, and a director's commentary on Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie.

While this release will be available at general retailers, the AllTheAnime website is offering its own bundles. There will be an "Exclusive Box" which can hold all three volumes, while the most limited online bundle (80 units) includes a replica Rose Seal Ring, a replica Black Rose Seal ring and a 250+ page art book.

Anime Limited describes the series:

"Never lose that strength or nobility, even when you grow up.'' When Utena was just a child and in the depths of sorrow, she found salvation in those words. They were the words of a prince, who wrapped her in his rose-scented embrace and bestowed upon her both a ring and the promise that it would lead her to him again. She never forgot the encounter. In fact, she was so impressed that she aspired to be like the prince and also help those in need.

"Now a spirited teenager, Utena attends the prestigious Ohtori Academy. However, her strong sense of chivalry soon places her at odds with the school's student council and thrusts her into a series of mysterious and dangerous duels against its members."

The 39-episode series originally aired in 1997. Kunihiko Ikuhara (Sailor Moon series director, Penguindrum) directed the series at J.C. Staff. The series starred Tomoko Kawakami as Utena Tenjou and Yuriko Fuchizaki as Anthy Himemiya.
