Higurashi: When They Cry Franchise Gets 2 New Manga Set in Reiwa Era

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

The October issue of Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan magazine revealed on Saturday that Square Enix will launch two new manga in the Higurashi franchise in November. The manga will tell two different arcs in an all-new story titled Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei. The kanji used for "Rei" is the kanji used in Japan's current Reiwa era, and is different from the kanji used in the When They Cry - Rei OAV series.

The taglines for both works reads, "Oyashiro-sama's wrath, once more in the age of Reiwa!!?"

The first manga will tell the "Oni Okoshi-hen" (Kindle a Demon Arc, pictured left), and that manga will launch on the Gangan Online website on November 25. The manga will center on characters Keitarō Maebara (left) and Kihiro (second from left). Kei Natsumi — who drew the first, third, and eighth arcs of the Umineko When They Cry manga — is drawing the manga. Ryukishi07 is credited with the original work.

The second manga will tell the "Hoshi Watashi-hen" (Star-Crossing Arc, pictured right), and the manga will launch in Monthly Big Gangan in its December issue on November 25. The manga will center on characters Inori Mikazuki (second from right) and Kururu Isshiki (right). Seigo Tokiya (Magical Girl Special Ops Asuka artist) is drawing the manga. Ryukishi07 is credited with the original work.

Manga creator Tomato Akase will launch a new manga titled Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Meguri (Higurashi: When They CryMeguri) in October on Kadokawa's Young Ace Up service. The manga will be a new answer arc for the Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU series. The Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU anime premiered in October 2020, and the 24th and final episode aired on March 18. Higurashi: When They Cry – SOTSU, the followup to the anime, premiered on July 1.

Update: Updated translations of two new manga titles.
