Sword Art Online The Movie - Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night will screen in Odeon, Showcase, Vue and Cineworld cinemas

Tickets are available for Sword Art Online The Movie - Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night (Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Kuraki Yūyami no Scherzo), the second film in the Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- anime film series. It will be screened in the UK and Ireland from Wednesday February 1, in both subtitled and English-dubbed versions, and the ticket website gives links to cinemas in the Odeon, Showcase, Vue and Cineworld chains. The film is distributed by Crunchyroll.

The anime is based on Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online: Progressive light novel series. The novel series launched in 2012 as a revised retelling of Kawahara's original Sword Art Online novels. The story depicts Kirito's journey through the floating Aincrad castle from the beginning, floor-by-floor.

The film features a returning cast from the first film, Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night. The second film is summarised at the website as follows [with some spoilers for the preceding film]:

"Over a month has passed since 10,000 users were trapped inside the game world. Asuna, who cleared the first floor of the floating iron castle of Aincrad, joined up with Kirito and continued her journey to reach the top floor. With support from the female Information Broker Argo thrown into the mix, clearing the floors seemed to be progressing smoothly, but… The top player groups leading in clears are “ALS” the Aincrad Liberation Squad and “DKB” the Dragon Knights Brigade. Conflict erupts between these two major guilds that should be working together. But behind the scenes exists a mysterious figure pulling the strings…"

Ayako Kohno (unit director on Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic, High School Fleet, The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky) returned to direct the film at A-1 Pictures, and Kento Toya (Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld, The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments) returned to design the characters. Yasuyuki Kai again served as action director, and Yuki Kajiura returned to compose the music. Eir Aoi performed the theme song "Shinzо̄" (Heart).
