posted on by Andrew Osmond
Helen McCarthy will present lectures in Brighton on August 23, Bristol on August 31, Belfast on September 19, Cambridge on September 11, and an "art of anime" lecture in London on September 26

The author Helen McCarthy will deliver lectures on "The Art History of Studio Ghibli" at several venues in August and September: at the Brighthelm Centre in Brighton on August 23 at 7 p.m. (tickets) ; at the Hen & Chicken in Bristol on August 31 at 7 p.m. (tickets); at Cambridge Junction in Cambridge on September 11 at 7 p.m. (tickets) and at MAC Live in Belfast on September 19 at 7.30 p.m. (tickets).

The lecture is described as follows:

"... There's a lot more to Studio Ghibli than just movies. Its art is driven by inspiration from Japanese and Western art, by energies from the streets of Japan and by the mystical qualities of its traditions and its wild places.

"Helen McCarthy, who wrote the first books in English on anime and on Ghibli's co- founding director Hayao Miyazaki, will take you on a journey through the studio's history and inspiration, with time and space to appreciate selected artworks and a list of sources – books, websites and places to visit - if you want to explore further."

McCarthy will also give a lecture on "The Art of Anime" at Juju's Bar and Stage in London on September 26 at 7 p.m. (tickets). Livestream tickets are also available. The lecture is described as follows:

"Helen McCarthy will take you on a tour of the evolution of the medium and its evolution from its earliest days to the unique and diverse medium we know today. Looking at the influence of iconic creators such as Osamu Tezuka, Hayao Miyazaki and CLAMP, we'll see how they and other have helped to shape anime into both a mass entertainment and a true art form."
