posted on by Andrew Osmond
Lectures in Belfast, Bristol, Liverpool, Manchster, Southampton, Sheffield, London, Cardiff and Bath

There are several lectures on Ghibli and anime scheduled at venues in the U.K. through the end of August and September and October.

Helen McCarthy is delivering lectures on "The Art History of Studio Ghibli." As of writing, tickets are available for the lecture at Hen & Chicken in Southville, Bristol at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday August 31 (tickets); Black Box in Belfast on Monday September 18 at 7.30 p.m. (tickets); MAC Live in Belfast on Tuesday September 19 at 7.30 p.m. (tickets); Camp and Furnace in Liverpool on Wednesday October 18 at 7.30 p.m. (tickets); and at Friends Meeting House in Manchester on Thursday October 19 at 7 p.m (tickets); and Engine Rooms in Southampton on Wednesday November 1 at 7.30 p.m. (tickets);

The lecture is described as follows:

"... There's a lot more to Studio Ghibli than just movies. Its art is driven by inspiration from Japanese and Western art, by energies from the streets of Japan and by the mystical qualities of its traditions and its wild places.

"Helen McCarthy, who wrote the first books in English on anime and on Ghibli's co- founding director Hayao Miyazaki, will take you on a journey through the studio's history and inspiration, with time and space to appreciate selected artworks and a list of sources – books, websites and places to visit - if you want to explore further."

McCarthy will also give a lecture on "The Art History of Anime" at Juju's Bar and Stage in London on September 26 at 7.30 p.m. (tickets). Livestream tickets are also available. The lecture is described as follows:

"Helen McCarthy will take you on a tour of the evolution of the medium and its evolution from its earliest days to the unique and diverse medium we know today. Looking at the influence of iconic creators such as Osamu Tezuka, Hayao Miyazaki and CLAMP, we'll see how they and other have helped to shape anime into both a mass entertainment and a true art form."

Tickets are also still available as of writing for a lecture on "History of Studio Ghibli" given by Shiro Yoshioka at The Leadmill in Sheffield on August 30 at 7.30 p.m. (tickets). The lecture is described as follows:

"Studio Ghibli is one of the globe's favourite film studios, bringing us classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Hayao Miyazaki, the director of these films, and the theme of ecology are often seen as synonymous with the name of the studio. However, in this talk, you will learn that is not everything. We will take you through the history and artistic direction of the company to investigate what makes the studio unique within the history of Japanese animation and why they are so successful."

There will also be a lecture on "Studio Ghibli: The Art of Industry" given by the author Rayna Denson at The Glee Club Cardiff on Wednesday September 13 at 7 p.m. (final entry 6.30 p.m.), with tickets available here. Denison will give the same talk at Komedia Bath on Monday October 16 at 7.30 p.m. (tickets). The lecture is described as follows:

"In this talk, Rayna Denison guides audiences through Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata's contributions to animation as an art form. She looks at how Studio Ghibli has worked to create animation art, taking in the influences that have shaped the look and feel of Ghibli's many superlative animated films from My Neighbor Totoro (1988) to The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013).

"Together we will explore the wide worlds of art that Miyazaki and Takahata's films draw upon. From a range of real-world places, to diverse forms of animation and fine art, this talk reveals the careful layering of imagery that is used to compose Studio Ghibli's films. At the same time, Rayna explores the work that underpins Studio Ghibli's artistic reputation. She reveals the sometimes hidden landscapes of animation practice that have helped Miyazaki and Takahata's Studio Ghibli become known the world over."
