New People Brings a Unique Tokyo Japanese Pop Culture Shopping Experience to the U.S. with Launch of New People the Store

San Francisco, CA, July 31, 2009 – NEW PEOPLE, a dynamic entertainment destination bringing the latest examples of Japanese popular culture to North American shores, presents visitors with an enticing invitation to explore a vast collection of fun and inventive products inspired by Japanese pop culture with the opening of the official NEW PEOPLE retail store on August 15th. NEW PEOPLE The Store is located on the mezzanine level of the new 20,000 square foot attraction located in the heart of San Francisco's historic Japantown at 1746 Post Street.

Making their U.S. debut at NEW PEOPLE The Store will be a fantastic selection of carefully selected Japanese products that include apparel, accessories, books, toys, DVDs, music, and design items for the home and office.

Vibrantly illustrated faces by artist Yūichi Yokoyama, who is famous for his unique voice in the world of contemporary art and comics, will greet visitors surrounded by the store's fun manga balloon inspired interior walls. The overall look of NEW PEOPLE The Store was designed by Tokyo's acclaimed architectural design firm, TORAFU, to be not only a store but also a giant art installation. Much of the interior construction and finishing details were completed by skilled artisans from Tokyo while the unique artistic furniture was created by noted designer Taiji Fujimori.

NEW PEOPLE The Store offers products that can be categorized into three distinct areas that represent the essence of Japanese pop culture. The first is manga and anime, designer toys and girly “kawaii” (cute) products. The second category includes the romantic and nostalgic aspects of Japanese pop culture and offers designer apparel, jewelry and paper crafts. The third category is represented by stationery and innovative ergonomic products that add flair and functionality to a home and office.

Some of the brands making their U.S. debut at NEW PEOPLE, The Store include:

Fewmany specializes in designer vinyl and high quality collectable figures. The company has collaborated with a variety of cutting-edge artists to produce wild and whimsical collections that takes hints from science fiction, comics, fantasy and pop culture. Many of these figures are totally unobtainable outside Japan, until now.

Giraffe, a specialized brand led by creative director Masamichi Toyama, are very hot in Tokyo right now. Giraffe neckties are categorized into four different stages based on one's body temperature and feeling so one can select ties based on how they feel that day.

Q-pot, a jewelry brand led by designer Tadaaki Wakamatsu, creates ice cream and cookie motif accessories that are a sensation among young girls in Japan today. The jewelry became even more popular in Asia following Q-pot's recent venture into Hong Kong. Before each season starts, Q-pot offers a new array of fun and witty jewelry confections that look good enough to eat!

SIWA are organically-inspired tote bags made from "washi,” a sturdy type of traditional Japanese paper that has been made for more than 1,200 years. The materials are designed and produced by ONAO, a renowned Japanese washi paper company, and the acclaimed product designer Naoto Fukazawa. The company offers a new type of washi-paper called "naoron,” that is lightweight and soft, but very durable, water-resistant, and strong enough to hold up to 22 pounds. The SIWA craftsmen also sew the seams in a way so that they are not visible but their overall design makes the totes even more durable.

IDEA is a high quality designer brand that specializes in lifestyle and house-ware products such as clocks, household electronics and an array of functional interior items. IDEA's innovative and ergonomically-designed products enhance the lives of their users. Some IDEA products debuting at NEW PEOPLE, The Store will include items such as colorful speakers made from a sponge that are small enough to fit in the palm of one's hand and designed for use with the iPod. Also available is a chimney-shaped ultra sonic humidifier that releases smoke-like soft mist into the air, along with a wide variety of other items that are fun and uniquely stylish yet completely functional.
