The Click
April 14th - April 20th

by Brian Hanson,

Greetings, fair Click aficionados! The Click is back for another full-on week of restrained depravity and irreverence, despite the onslaught of paperwork I've been caught up in recently, so done in the vain hope that a small fraction of my probably-hard-earned tax dollars might (emphasis might) be refunded to me in a none-too-timely six to eight weeks. As the often asked questions goes, "what are you spending your tax refund on?" The simple answer will probably be the copy of Super Paper Mario I put on reserve some two months ago. Of course, I should probably put any spare income into any number of more practical things, such as fixing my car door, donating it to war-torn orphans suffering from severe discomfort and ennui, or possibly make strides on the hefty gambling debts and legal fees associated with my former persona. A smart man, however, would note that life's troublesome events can always be postponed for the collection of material goods and electronic diversions. And I happen to fashion myself as something of a smart man.

Shin Chan
(Cartoon Network)
-Thursday April 19 12:30am - Episode 7 "A Mutha Bleeping Bunny!" (Repeats Thu Apr 19 4:00am)
-Friday April 20 12:30am - Episode 8 "The Shin Must Poop On" (Repeats Fri Apr 20 4:00am)

Yes! Seems as though the six episode "test run" concocted by the Adult Swims powers that be was a success, prompting a full-fledged twenty episode pickup for Shin Chan. I understand that, if you happened to miss the original two-week test, these episode titles probably don't inspire much confidence; however you have my word (such as it is) that Funimation's sass-infused TV dub is actually and honestly funny, thanks to both Funimation's stable of writers but also the help of comic book scribe and Space Ghost: Coast to Coast alumni Evan Dorkin. Like the much more kid-friendly Bo-Bobo dub, Shin Chan's "Americanized" TV outing strikes the right chord of faithfulness in regards to the original animation while peppering the script with enough clever (and often tasteless) jokes to entertain that most elusive creature, the non-anime fan.

PREMIERES:

Basilisk
(Independent Film Channel)
Friday April 20 11:30pm - Episode 16 "First Impressions" (Repeats Sat Apr 21 5:30am)

The wonderful thing about Basilisk is that I've already written about these episodes before, thanks to a wonderful deal on Canada's Razer TV station. On one lonely October day, I had this to say about Basilisk Episode 16: "Remember the Kouga and Iga ninja clans, and how they really hated each other and tried to kill each other in order to acquire sacred scrolls and earn support from the Shogunate and stuff? If you do, congratulations on your Japanese History undergraduate degree. For the rest of us, this episode of Basilisk involves those two ninja Odd Couples as they attempt to unite their warring factions with an arranged wedding. Sounds like a recipe... for disaster!"

Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad
(MuchMusic)
-Sunday April 15 3:00pm - Episode 11 "Summer Holiday" (Repeats Mon Apr 16 12:00am, Tue Apr 17 7:00pm, Wed Apr 18 12:00am, 4:00pm)
-Sunday April 15 3:30pm - Episode 12 "Secret Live" (Repeats Mon Apr 16 12:30am, Tue Apr 17 7:30pm, Wed Apr 18 12:30am, 4:30pm)

The boys of the Mongolian Chop Squad are naturally ecstatic that one of their favorite contemporary American bands, Dying Breed, are on tour in Japan, while young love infects the shy Koyuki, as it often does with biologically confused middle schoolers. Beck is sort of a wonderful textbook example of an anime series that isn't about robots and explosions and samurai violence.

Bleach
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday April 15 12:00am - Episode 29 (Repeats Sun Apr 15 3:00am)

Veteran anime voice actor Spike Spencer makes a great leap, formerly portraying the scrawny and emotional Shinji Ikari in the seminal Evangelion to voice the scrawny and emotional Soul Reaper Yamada Hanataro in Bleach. This episode in particular showcases Hanataro's wussiness, as Ichigo and Ganju take the spindly weakling hostage in order to escape the throngs of murderous Soul Reapers hot on their trail.

Blood+
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday April 15 12:30am - Episode 5 "Beyond the Dark Forest" (Repeats Sun Apr 15 3:30am)

David, head of the super-secret ultra-classified group that shadows the young Saya in her quest to eradicate the Chiropterans, leads his group to infiltrate a super-secret ultra-classified laboratory where a friend is being held. Then, violence.

Bobobo-bo Bo-Bobo
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday April 14 8:30pm - Episode 55 "The Gang's All Here: And Boy Are They Weird!"

Bobobo returns to that correct time! This week, depending upon him with that friend who helps him another circle of the wicked bad guy fights! Victoly!

Cowboy Bebop
(Razer)
Sunday April 15 9:00pm - Episode 17 "Mushroom Samba"

In one of the most intentionally surreal 22 minutes of anime ever, Ed and Ein set off to find food and wind up on the trail of an anime dead-ringer for Pam Grier and other tropes of 70's "blaxsploitation" films, while the rest of the Bebop crew trips balls on 'shrooms. For serious.

Elemental Gelade
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday April 17 5:00pm - Episode 12 "Rush For Freedom" (Repeats Tue Apr 17 8:00pm, Wed Apr 18 12:30am, 12:00pm)

For those of you who simply can't get enough of spritely, colorful animated characters shouting nonsense words like "Edel Reid" and knocking each other around with diverse and odd melee weaponry, it's Elemental Gelade! This week: Cou and Ren discuss the finer points of contemporary surrealist literature. Or maybe not.

Eureka 7
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday April 15 1:00am - Episode 48 "Ballet Mechanique" (Repeats Sun Apr 15 4:00am)

This is what we in the scriptwriting/episode synopsis industry refer to as the "climax." When all the questions and complications of the labyrinthine plot come together with one final twist or complication added for good measure. This week, Dewey is ready to fire his devastating new weapon, while Eureka and Renton finally arrive at the Control Cluster, but are impeded by an unexpected adversary!

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday April 17 6:30pm - Episode 12 "Encore" (Repeats Tue Apr 17 9:30pm, Wed Apr 18 2:00am, 1:30pm)

As news of the broken engagement referred to in the previous episode is spread, all hell breaks loose. Is this all part of the Count's sinister plan? More questions and more plot than you though possible to cram into an ultra-stylized half-hour series await you in this week's episode of Sci-Fi Anime Alexander Dumas Interpretation!

Gundam SEED Destiny
(YTV)
Friday April 20 9:30pm - Episode 7 "The Dazed Earth" (Repeats Sat Apr 21 1:30am)

The Junius 7 crashes to the Earth, destroying lots of things and killing people and generally being a nuisance. This of course angers the noble Gundam pilots who fought hard to prevent this incident, while news breaks that genetically-enhanced Gundam pilots known as "coordinators" were responsible for the incident.

Hikaru no Go
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Monday April 16 8:30am - Episode 13 "Each of Their Decision" (Repeats Tue Apr 17 5:00am)
-Tuesday April 17 8:30am - Episode 14 "The Third Match" (Repeats Wed Apr 18 5:00am)
-Wednesday April 18 8:30am - Episode 15 "The Player on the Net" (Repeats Thu Apr 19 5:00am)
-Thursday April 19 8:30am - Episode 16 "Who Is Sai?" (Repeats Fri Apr 20 5:00am)
-Friday April 20 8:30am - Episode 17 "The Match of Revelation" (Repeats Sat Apr 21 5:00am)

This week on Dramatized Animated Stone-Placing Series, Hikaru takes over for a beleaguered classmate during an important Go game, discovers the joy of playing Go online, and basically plays a lot of Go.

Idaten Jump
(Cartoon Network)
-Thursday April 19 6:00am - Episode 19 "Showdown, Part 1"
-Friday April 20 6:00am - Episode 20 "Showdown, Part 2"

I'm quite tempted to begin some kind of betting pool wherein I would challenge readers to actually wake up (i.e. NOT TiVo) in order to watch this show - both episodes - for two weeks. Is it actually possible for this show to actually be as bad as it both looks and sounds? Legal issues probably prevent me from doing so, and perhaps such a question was never meant to be answered.

King of Bandit Jing
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Monday April 16 9:30am - Episode 11 "The Masquerade Ball of Zaza, Part 1" (Repeats Tue Apr 17 5:30am)
-Tuesday April 17 9:30am - Episode 12 "The Masquerade Ball of Zaza, Part 2" (Repeats Wed Apr 18 5:30am)
-Wednesday April 18 9:30am - Episode 13 "The Masquerade Ball of Zaza, Part 3" (Repeats Thu Apr 19 5:30am)

I had totally forgotten that King of Bandit Jing was only a short 13-episode series. Which probably means a cheap boxset of the series exists. Which I would wholly recommend purchasing, for reasons I believe I mentioned in last week's column. Anyway, in these last three episodes, Jing and his wisecracking bird sidekick, Kir, arrive in the town of Zaza to attend the "Masquerade Ball," which isn't quite a "ball" in the traditional sense as it is a massive fighting tournament to determine the next heir to the throne.

Kino's Journey
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Thursday April 19 9:30am - Episode 1 "Land of Visible Pain" (Repeats Fri Apr 20 5:30am)
-Friday April 20 9:30am - Episode 2 "A Tale of Feeding Off Others" (Repeats Sat Apr 21 5:30am)

Now here's another pleasant surprise, in the sense that I had another one of those "Wow I never, ever thought this would be on TV anywhere... but it's really good, so that's great!" Kino's Journey is a quiet, contemplative series focusing on the wayward Kino and her talking motorcycle, Hermes, and their storied journeys through the countryside, visiting every town along the way for three whole days and documenting their experience. Lots of interesting ideas and concepts in this series, although the early-morning timeslot alongside the lighthearted King of Bandit Jing and Hikaru no Go confuses me.

Kyoh Kara Maoh
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday April 17 5:30pm - Episode 12 "The Chain of Love and Fate" (Repeats Tue Apr 17 8:30pm, Wed Apr 18 1:00am, 12:30pm, 1:00pm)

For that very special type of fan who have actually uttered, out loud mind you, the words "kawaii," "bishie," and "man-on-man action," Kyo Kara Maoh is that special type of show, made almost eerily with such tastes in mind. This episode: Engagements? Emphasis on the question mark, there.

The Law of Ueki
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday April 17 6:00pm - Episode 12 "The Law of Heavenly Beings" (Repeats Tue Apr 17 9:00pm, Wed Apr 18 1:30am, 1:00pm)

In order to become one of the ten members of the aptly named Robert's Ten, the eponymous Robert has the titular Ueki pass a rigorous initiation that sees the young lad fighting one of the esteemed Robert's Ten members. On an unrelated note, I've always wondered how members of bands or whatever feel about being in a group wherein the founders' name is in their title. See: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, the Ben Folds Five, the Edgar Winter Group, et cetera. I somehow think, however, that this episode is more concerned with stylized violence than answering a pointless question.

MÄR
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday April 14 10:00pm - Episode 6 "Snow: The Young Girl Inside the Ice"

More shows should have umlauts in their titles. Anyway, this week in MÄR, Ginta and Jack encounter a noble dog named Edward, who politely asks the two ÄRM-wielding gentlemen to rescue his princess, Snow. Stay tuned after MÄR for The Prïncë of Tënnïs!

Naruto
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday April 14 9:00pm - Episode 83 "Jiraiya: Naruto's Potential Disaster!"

Jiraiya, the "pervy sage," is constantly distracted from training his young ward by the sight of the pretty, pretty ladies. Meanwhile, on a more serious note, Sasuke learns of his brother's evil intentions and searches to warn the unaware Naruto.

(YTV)
Friday April 20 8:00pm - Episode 77 "Light vs. Dark: The Two Faces of Gaara"

Gaara continues to relate his sad and storied past, wherein Naruto comes to the stunning realization that, had he not met his friends and colleagues, he might have turned out as misanthropic and villainous as Gaara! Then fighting ensues.

One Piece
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday April 14 9:30pm - Episode 85 "The Weather Forcer"

Puns, puns, puns! One Piece continues its run of being the only half-hour pun-based show on television, with the occasional bout of animated pirate action, this week as Nami accustoms herself to her new weapon, the so-called "Weather Forcer." Will she pull an Arnold Schwarzenegger and tell her opponents to "chill" before spraying them with ice? One can only hope!

The Prince of Tennis
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday April 14 10:30pm - Episode 6 "Nanjiro Echizen"

Ryoma's elusive and reclusive father, the aforementioned Nanjiro Echizen, dodges questions from eager reporters, while Ryoma himself trains for his next big match. If I had a juvenile and crass joke to make about tennis "balls," it would go here.

Samurai Champloo
(Razer)
Sunday April 15 9:30pm - Episode 17 "Lullabies of the Lost, Verse 2"

This week on The Best Damn Thing on TV, Jin again confronts the ghosts of his past and must make a painful decision to end or spare a life. Typical samurai dilemma.

Trigun
(G4TechTV Canada)
-Monday April 16 8:30pm - Episode 12 "Diablo"
-Tuesday April 17 8:30pm - Episode 13 "Vash the Stampede"
-Wednesday April 18 8:30pm - Episode 14 "Little Arcadia"
-Thursday April 19 8:30pm - Episode 15 "Demon's Eye"
-Friday April 20 8:30pm - Episode 16 "Fifth Moon"

This is the point in the series when the "spoiler" tags finally come off, as Vash the Stampede shows a new and surprising part of his character during a fight with Monev the Gale. Then, there's a clever recap episode, a goofy stand-alone episode barely featuring Vash at all, and the violent introduction of the deadly Gung-Ho Guns.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday April 14 7:30pm - Episode 106 "Jewel of a Duel, Part 1"

This week on School-Themed Card Dueling Program, the accredited Duel Academy receives a bevy of new recruits, chief among them a mysterious boy who wields "Jewel Beasts," and, of course, challenges Jaden to a Duel. I guess in the Yu-Gi-Oh-verse, card duels have replaced handshakes. Won't a simple "hello" suffice? Or a casual "'sup"?

It's a Katsuhiro Otomo triple-feature, with all three of his directorial outings (not counting, of course, his live-action work) featured on the Encore movie networks. For reference, Akira is the one that everybody's seen, Memories is the one that not many people have seen but is amazingly good, and Steamboy is the one that I've seen and am (mostly) alone in really, really liking.

Digimon: The Movie
(Toon Disney)
Sunday April 15 12:00pm

Pokemon Diamond & Pearl: New Adventure in Sinnoh
(Cartoon Network)
Friday April 20 8:00pm (Repeats Fri Apr 20 10:30pm)

Meanwhile, for those anime fans who prefer their feature films to include the suffix "-mon" somewhere in the title, Toon Disney and Cartoon Network have you covered. For reference, Digimon The Movie is actually better than it has any right to be, featuring wonderful art direction and animation by now-hotshot director Mamoru Hosoda (heading to future anime stardom, thanks to the wonderful The Girl Who Leapt Through Time), whereas this latest Pokemon outing is mysteriously appearing on air this week to coincide with the newly-released Pokemon games for the Nintendo DS.

Just remember not to stay up too late watching Shin Chan on Monday night, and get them taxes done right. Or maybe not at all, if you were like myself many years ago and were, legally speaking, situated either in the Cayman Islands or the Czech Republic. I'll be back next week with more stuff!
